Technical Education

Education can be divided into three parts. Education that teaches us how to live in society is called social education. The education that develops our personality may be termed as spiritual education. Education that teaches us how to earn our living is named as vocational education. Technical education is a branch of vocational education.

It means training technology, industry or mechanics. It's aim is to provide instruction and training in skills that have a practical use. Those who obtain such education learn the parts or components of machines and the ways of working and repairing them. They also learn about the production and use of their spare parts.

The engineers, builders and mechanics are the most useful section of an industrial society. Ours is the age of industry. In our parts of the world where industrialization is just beginning there is a great need for technical workers. Even agriculture which has been our major occupation will not prosper if modern ways of cultivation are not employment. It is possible only if our farmers are trained to use agricultural machines. Thus they will be able to do more work is less time.

Technical education is not only necessary but also the only answer to the problem of our expanding economy. Through technical education we can increase the material resources of our country. It promotes the material prosperity and economic advancement. It imparts quickness, attention, neatness and order in the workers. It creates faith in the dignity of labors. If a country has her own technical experts, she can save a lot of foreign exchange. It produces doers and workers, and the workers are the people who make real and important contribution to the welfare of society, naturally society must honors them and pay them better wages. In short, technical education makes a country rich, prosperous and resourceful.

In England, there is lack of technical education. Our schools and colleges produce clerks. Our young-men run after office jobs. They have to learn practical skills. Poverty in England is due to the neglect of technical education. Our country is rich in raw material resources. But we do not have technical knowledge to benefit from them. We should know that technical education is the very condition of modern civilization. Our educationists must realize the need of technical education. More and more technical institutions should be established and idea of dignity of labor should be popularized if we want our country to progress and prosper.

Baking and Pastry Schools Are the Starting Point of a Career As a Baker Or Pastry Chef

When you look at a beautiful cake, or elaborate pastry, you probably could never imagine all that went into creating it. Sure, there is the natural talent of the chef, but there is also lots of training, sometimes years of learning techniques that elevate a food lover to the level of master. Make no mistake, although they are doing what they love, this is hard work, and they have paid their dues in years of schooling to get where they are. Baking and pastry schools are areas of a culinary arts education which encompass many different aspects of creating these delicacies.

These programs, which can result in an Associates, Bachelors Degree, as well as certificates, offer extensive training in areas such as nutrition and food science, plating and presentation, and cake decorating. Many courses offer hands on experiences in simulated kitchens, giving students a realistic experience of a working kitchen. Other experiences can include competitions among students on certain projects and techniques.

At a baking school, instructors usually prepare their students for work in restaurants, bakeries, hotels and catering services throughout the world. In addition to the culinary side, students who have their sights set upon opening their own business will have the benefit of management courses as part of their curriculum.

What many experienced chefs would recommend before enrolling in baking and pastry schools, is to become familiar with the work you hope to do. Working in some capacity in a specialty bakery, or catering company, can give you a no nonsense impression of what this field is all about. If the day in and day out of the business doesn't deter you, then maybe you really do have what it takes to carve out a career as a baker or pastry chef. As with any business, it is always a good thing to understand how an industry works on every level. From the office, where the numbers are crunched, to the kitchen where those scrumptious dishes are created, and plated with delicate artistry, to the dining room, where all of that effort culminates in the satisfaction of your diners, this is a profession that is worth pursuing, if you have the passion.

Answering Your Culinary Schools Questions

There is something relaxing about cooking a favorite meal at home. The delicious aromas while the food is cooking and then there is the final product awaiting your taste buds. Have you ever given any thought to taking your love and passion for food and making it into a career?

Many people are finding rewarding careers in the food industry. Culinary schools are experiencing record enrollment thanks in part to television shows such as 'Hell's Kitchen' and 'Top Chef'.

Each week participants put their cooking skills to the test and it makes others yearn to be in the kitchen doing the same thing. Even if cooking is not your idea of fun there are other aspects of the food industry that are taught in culinary schools.

You may want to work on the business side. Where ever your passion for food lies, a culinary school can help you find the skills you need. In this article we will cover the basics of culinary schools and what you can expect from this fiery career choice.

What do culinary schools teach?

Culinary schools begin with the basics of the kitchen. One of the first lessons you will learn is about kitchen safety such as handling knives and what to do in an emergency such as a fire. You will learn basic food preparation guidelines such as what temperature is acceptable on meats.

You will learn basic accounting, computer skills, inventory management and even some psychology. Culinary schools want you to have a diverse background because the workplace is so diverse. The most important lesson you learn is how to work together as a team. One person cannot run a restaurant or kitchen alone so teamwork is absolutely essential.

Are culinary schools all about learning how to cook?

You may be surprised to learn that culinary schools do teach more than kitchen skills such as knife handling and how to make a souffle. They also teach students how to deal with the public, how to handle finances and how to manage inventory.

There is also instruction on how to communicate effectively as well as manage employees. Culinary schools want to give you a broad background on the food industry. The more information you have the better prepared you will be when you graduate.

Do certain schools specialize in different areas of the culinary world?

There are schools that do specialize in certain cuisines but you would typically find these specialized schools overseas. The culinary schools in the United States tend to teach a broad spectrum since culinary palates are so diverse here. Should you wish to study French cuisine exclusively it would be best to attend a school in France where you can learn from the masters of the trade.

What are some of the jobs that I can expect to work in after I graduate from a culinary school?

There are a wide variety of jobs that can open up for you once you have graduated from one. You can be a line chef, an assistant baker, a restaurant manager and even be a pantry cook. Do not expect to get out of school and immediately become a master chef.

It takes years of hard work in order to obtain the level of experience that you need in order to say you are a master chef. You may study for ten years under another chef before you go out on your own. Eventually you will gain the knowledge and skills you need in order to be considered a master chef. The trick is patience and practice.

Low Glycemic Index Treat - Old Fashioned Root Beer!

Old-school root beer: sassafras, allspice, ginger, wild cherry bark, vanilla beans, sarsaparilla, licorice, molasses
Modern-day root beer: artificial flavors, benzoate anions

Side effects of old-school ingredients: detoxifies organs, purifies blood, stimulates digestion, kills bacteria, pain reliever, astringent

Side effects of modern-day ingredients: allergies, asthma, gastric upset, hyperactivity, migranes, nausea
We've come a long way, baby...in the wrong direction. Will the real root beer please stand up?

Root beer has been made for centuries. Termed "small beer", the first concoctions were a collection of herbs and spices tossed together and simmered. This powerful medicinal concoction was first carbonated in 1876, and as the food industry grew more mechanized and concerned with shelf life, artificial flavors and preservatives began to replace the potent and benevolent plant forces present in the original drink. How lucky for us that we can still make our own!

Although I've never been a soda fiend, I know plenty of people who love to have a sweet, crisp, bubbly and fluid taste in their mouths. If you fall under that category but you are focused on losing weight, never fear. You can indulge in this scrumptious homemade root beer, enjoying an ancient tradition while keeping your blood sugar stable AND filling your body with miraculous beneficial herbal medicine.

ROOT BEER
Ingredients
3 Tbsp. sarsaparilla root (about 1/2 ounce)
1 Tbsp. licorice root
1 qt. purified water
2-3 tsp. dried Stevia leaf -OR-
3-4 Stevia teabags
2 qts. carbonated water

Procedure
Simmer the sarsaparilla and licorice root in the quart of water for about 45 minutes. DO NOT BOIL - it brings out bitter principles. Add the Stevia leaf or teabags and simmer for 15 minutes longer.

Strain the plant material and return the pan to the burner. Simmer on very low until liquid is reduced to half. Remove from heat and strain through a cheesecloth. Will be left with about 12 ounces of concentrate. Chill in refrigerator.
Add two ounces of concentrate to 10-12 ounces carbonated water. Add Stevia extract to taste, if more sweetener is desired.

Yield: About 6 large glasses

Suggestion: May use 2 tbsp. of sarsaparilla and 2 tbsp. licorice root OR add any other barks or herbs of your choice.

Unique Translation and Interpreting Jobs in Literature, Academia and the Arts

"[An] interesting piece I did was a script for a docudrama on Internet romance."- Yohanna Valdez, French Translator

Translators and Interpreters work in many different fields and industries, including business, culinary, marketing and public relations, science, education, academia, film, visual arts, music, history, engineering, health, legal, social sciences, and non-profit work. There are several unique areas of specialty. Often, these specialties will expand over time, meaning that one could become an expert in multiple fields. While one could easily imagine a translator working on a business contract or an interpreter assisting on a conference call, there are lots of other unique opportunities out there in literature and the arts.

Typically, literary translators work very closely with the author of the source text to make sure they are capturing the style and literary nuances as accurately as possible. Interestingly, many multilingual authors even prefer a third party to convert their work, since this is a very special skill set that many authors do not even possess. After an author has worked once with someone and the collaboration has been successful, it would be rare that the author would ever have anyone else translate his or her work.

There are many examples of literary translators working in pairs to complete a longer manuscript. This could be done in a variety of ways - each person could take one half of the manuscript, interpret it individually and then come back together to smooth out transitions, or one collaborator could simply act as a "second pair of eyes" on the text, checking for consistency, clarity, authenticity and tone. Typically, literary translators only specialize in one or two genres (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, etc.). Most people in this field translate into their native language. Interpreters are often used in conferences or interviews with famous authors.

For example, Janine Libbey, who started out doing business translations, had an interesting interpreting experience in the literary world. "I worked on an interview with William Kennedy, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his book Ironweed, for one of Spain's leading newspapers. To be honest, I find almost every job to be interesting because I learn something new with each project," says Janine Libbey, a Spanish specialist who operates her own company.

Jen Westmoreland Bouchard, a French translator and interpreter, has had some unique opportunities to use her skills within the film industry. The term "film translation" encompasses many types of work. It can include the conversion of articles or other written materials that will help in the making of the film, film subtitles, and synopses, reviews, or marketing materials.

"I have done all types of film translations - I've worked through interviews for documentary films, done subtitles (French to English), and even worked on publicity materials for a film that went to the Cannes film festival. It's exciting to be involved in the process. One of the most interesting projects I did was interpreting interviews and doing subtitles for a documentary on rap in Dakar, Senegal," says Bouchard.

Academic translation usually involves working on academic articles, abstracts, essays, and manuscripts. Many academic writers work exclusively with one or two specialists throughout their career, since the language interpreter becomes very comfortable with and efficient at translating that writer's particular style. While workers in this area of focus don't need to hold a degree specifically in the field in which they are working, some experience is necessary. It is more important for the interpreter to be a strong academic writer in the target language and to be familiar with the lexicon and general frameworks (theoretical, argumentative, etc.) of the field. Most academic translators translate into their native language.

"I've done quite a bit of academic translation - manuscripts, articles, abstracts, etc. Sometimes scholars of literature will contact me to work on previously un-translated texts (written by someone else) so that they can use this information in their research. The most interesting project like this I have done was a year-long project during which I translated articles from 1800s Parisian arts journals from French to English for an art history scholar," says Bouchard.

Marketing Management

For those with a talent for marketing who are actively looking toward the next level in this diverse and fast paced career path, a marketing management degree could be exactly what you're looking for. From a marketing management certificate in less than a year to a Bachelor degree in as little as four years, it's an attainable and rewarding degree with a broad spectrum of jobs available at the completion of your education.

Marketing managers are the backbone of the marketing industry and are the ones responsible for analyzing market trends, pinpointing target markets and ensuring campaign effectiveness.

A creative marketing campaign is nothing if it isn't reaching the correct market or pushing the right buttons of consumerism and a marketing management degree will give you the tools and the skills to help you do exactly that. Marketing managers can successfully launch new products, employ strategic market planning and spot trends before they hit the mainstream market.

Degree programs will also help you learn how to effectively lead a team, liaison between staff and clients, and recognize problems before they become damaging to a client, campaign, or specific brand.

With the down turn in our global economy, well trained marketing managers have become an even more important part of the marketing process. With less funds available for marketing, promotions and general advertising, it has become vitally important that any and all marketing hit its desired audience. Gone are the days of expensive and scattered "blanket marketing" strategies as few companies can afford such a hit and miss approach. Companies, both large and small, are demanding marketing strategies that are tighter, more direct and certainly more commercially beneficial. To attain this level of marketing precision, more and more businesses are putting their money behind a professional with a marketing management degree. In less than four years, that could be you.

Popular Career Paths Associated With Culinary Programs

Without doubt, cooking is much more than preparing great food. Today, cooking is a true art form, a career that requires formal education to learn how to create dishes, make dishes, and design dishes for presentation. If you love working with food and are eager start a fulfilling and successful career in the food industry, it is imperative that you choose a reputable school or college that offers the most comprehensive culinary programs available.

If your goal were to become a great chef, you would need to complete specialized programs in culinary management. After all, being a chef has to do with more than creating masterpiece dishes. For instance, chefs often order food, set, and maintain food budgets, oversee kitchen staff, provide training, design, and create menus, etc. For this reason, culinary programs are designed to give you the skills needed for each of the facets of being a chef.

After going through the required culinary programs, you would walk away with an earned certificate or degree, depending on the school attended and the type of career pursuing. Again, working as a head chef for a major restaurant, high-end hotel, or luxury resort would require a degree in culinary arts. This degree would be earned based on classroom education but also hands-on training so upon graduation, you could go directly to work.

Some of the career opportunities that a certificate or degree in culinary arts would provide include the following.

Baking/Pastry Chef

The dessert at the end of a fabulous meal is usually the part of the dining experience most people anticipate. As a trained baking/pastry chef, you would have the ability to create amazing pastry desserts for guests to enjoy. Since this is a specialized career path, choosing the right school would be imperative.

Catering Chef

Another possibility is learning to be a catering chef. Many schools offer special culinary programs that focus on this career, which includes training for serving hundreds of guests opposed to a table of five. Obviously, catering presents unique challenges that a standard head chef might not face so completing proper education would teach you how to eliminate problems but also prepare you to handle obstacles when they arise.

Restaurant Managers

One need within the food industry that continues to grow is for quality restaurant managers. Years ago, managers simply oversaw restaurant operations, meaning they had no real knowledge of being a chef. However, to become an effective restaurant manager for a high-end establishment, you would need a two-year associate's degree.

Some of the areas of education covered include budgeting, kitchen and wait staff supervision, order taking, and chef work. Although your dishes might not be to the same caliber as the actual chef, as a restaurant manager, you would need to know how to make each menu item should the chef not show up for work. After all, you could not leave your guests waiting to experience a positive dining experience.

Sommeliers

Culinary programs also include education to become a Sommelier, which is someone trained and highly knowledgeable in wine and spirits. This specialized training includes service, procurement, storage, wine rotation, and wine characteristics. Programs to become a Sommelier take from nine months to two years, depending on the level of education and the educational institution.

Important Strategies and Tips for Scoring High in the GMAT Quantitative Section

There have been several instances where improper time management, although a very minor error, had a major impact of the eventual GMAT score. Therefore I wanted to share my personal strategies I used for the quant section and demonstrate how proper time management can go a long way in deciding your final GMAT score.

GMAT Quant strategies:

1. It's not as easy as you think: Yes, even though it's comparatively easier to do well and score high in this section, oftentimes even a little bit of complacency on your part can damage your prospect of attaining close to 50 in quantitative section and as a result make it even more difficult to reach the coveted 700+ score in the GMAT test.

2. Do not lose focus: Most people get at least 3-4 questions wrong for the silliest of reasons possible. This is because of lack of focus or because of nervousness at the very beginning. Concentrate on first 10-15 questions a lot more than usual and make sure you get them right. Do not bother about time here and you can even spend as much as 30-40 minutes just for these questions.

3. The next 12 questions can be tackled quickly. Try and answer them in about 20 minutes. That should give you enough time to focus on the last set of questions which again are important.

4. Preserve roughly about 20 minutes for the final 10 questions. By the end of this section many people get to a saturation point and that is why it is always crucial to give more time for each question. You concentration levels are really tested here.

5. Even though it's quite essential to get the first 10-12 questions right, if you happen to get a question that you have never seen before and you are finding it difficult to solve, don't get stuck there and waste too much time. Since you have stipulated about 3 minutes each for the first 10-15 questions, make sure you don't cross 5 minutes for any one question. Simply make an intelligent guess and move to the next one.

Do not get frustrated for not getting the question absolutely right. That is because you can generally get a score of 48-50 even with 10 questions wrong.

6. Quant sections, which consist of Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency, are not merely about learning and remembering all the formula. It's about understanding what has been asked and providing an answer to the question asked. GMAT quant is considered tricky because of its wordings. Ensure that you don't do any of these following mistakes:

Getting confused and choosing a percentage answer instead of the actual number.
Choosing a number when clearly the ratio was asked.
Forgetting to see a "NOT" mentioned in the sentence and therefore getting the meaning of the sentence completely wrong.

Hopefully this will help all of you GMAT aspirants perform better in the quantitative section of GMAT.

Specialized Culinary Schools in New York

The culinary arts are a very multifaceted discipline, and culinary schools in New York show how varied it truly is. A student, for example, can specialize on restaurant management instead of taking a generalized program. A look at the culinary schools with niche specialization proves this.

The Italian Culinary Academy and the French Culinary Institute are two good examples of culinary school specialization. Obviously, the French Culinary Institute is an institution that offers courses on French cuisine-easily one of the most popular and most complex cuisines in the world. Students here can take up full courses or short programs, all of which are focused on the fine are of French cooking. After all, a French culinary school is the best place to learn about deboning and filleting, artisan bread baking, fundamentals of wine, breakfast breads, and fondant-making?

Meanwhile, the Italian Culinary Academy offers the most extensive Italian cuisine curriculum this side of the world. The school has two courses: Essentials of Italian Cooking (for those who want to learn about the intricacies of Italian cooking) and Italian Culinary Experience (for those who want to understand the basics of Italian cuisine). The Essentials of Italian Cooking is an eight unit course that teaches students the basics of various basic Italian food, such as dried pasta (unit one), soups and grains (unit seven), cheese, pizza, and calzone (unit 2), and desserts (unit 8). Although it does not offer bachelor courses, the academy offers very intensive lessons on this specialization that no other cooking schools in New York can match.

Summer Jobs For College Students - Where Are the Opportunities?

It is a simple fact that young adults who are motivated enough to be part of the group that looks for summer jobs for college students are the types that will no doubt have a better chance of being more successful adults.

Having finished a tough school year and then being mature or driven enough to even consider summer jobs demonstrates strong character.

The issues we are facing these days are that even experienced and educated job seekers are having a tough time finding employment. This reduces the normal pool of summer jobs for in traditional jobs reserved for students on summer break.

The benefits these young folks have is a understanding of the internet and how to use so many thing like social media sites. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and sites like these are normal life for today's young adults. Little do they know that they have experience using sites that are also heavily used by people to build and grow businesses online.

I love it when I see the eyes of a student light up as the training clicks in his/her head. Terminology can be a hurdle but the average college student already has a grasp of "internet speak"

There is a host of great and free information online about opportunities for students and anyone really to begin making and building a full time income online without spending money. It is probably the best of the summer jobs for college students that one will find anywhere.

You must also be careful of the scams involving making money online designed to rob your wallet. A simple guideline to follow what a program or piece of information is claiming. Anything that says you will have thousands of dollars in your bank account in a couple days is probably not totally legitimate.

Find something that proves it works and has realistic expectations as far as short medium and long term earnings.

Take a Cooking Class For Fun

Some people love to cook; some people hate to cook. But many people get into a habit of preparing the same dishes over and over.

Here's what I did to get out of my own personal cooking rut -- I took a cooking class. I enrolled in a class that met one night a week for about three months. We met at a local community college classroom/kitchen. There were about 12 students in the class and our instructor was an experienced chef from a local restaurant.

The class consisted of short lectures and in-class participation where we learned all about ingredients, cookware, bakeware, ovens, burners, common chef's tools and more. We learned about when to cook something on extreme high heat and when to only simmer other items, depending upon the outcome desired. We learned how to handle knives, how to chop correctly and how to prepare items as quickly as possible.

We also had weekly homework assignments where we had to prepare a main dish or a side dish at home. Homework was never this good in college.

The best thing that I got out of the class was that it took me out of my normal cooking routines. I prepared new dishes, purchased new spices, got a few new pans and upgraded my whisks, knives and other tools, plus I corrected old mistakes (I've been over-cooking my brocoli). Just adding a little variety to what I've been doing has made cooking, baking and preparing meals almost fun again.

One thing my class didn't get into was pastry making.

Career and vocational education is designed to develop the basic skills required to perform jobs, mainly in technical fields.

Every year, thousands of aspiring students enroll in various career colleges, also known as technical or vocational schools. A student can earn a certificate, diploma or a degree, depending on the career and the college that is selected.

Some career colleges offer education in a few, select vocation related fields, while others provide numerous career-oriented subjects. Some of the most popular subjects and careers include accounting, business administration, cosmetology, hotel or restaurant management, nursing information technology and fashion designing. The courses are conducted by trained professionals or industry experts and help the graduates to excel in specific, chosen vocations.

Students who have completed their high school or graduation can seek guidance from professional advisors of career education forums. Students are introduced to a variety of career options and imbibe the skills and education required in fields, such as culinary arts, dental assistance, heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, hotel and restaurant management and real estate.

There are career education centers that provide the resources, such as pamphlets, audiovisuals, electronic databases, software and periodicals. This helps the students in dealing with job search strategies, resumes, letter writing and academic test preparations. The centers conduct pre-employment tests to determine a candidate's skill and personality, to analyze whether he could perform in a particular environment. There are many sites on career education that guide people to prepare themselves for their specific vocations in life.
